Hypnobirthing: A Personalized Preparation for a Confident Birth

Hypnobirthing: A Personalized Preparation for a Confident Birth

September 23, 2026•3 min read

Hypnobirthing® is a childbirth preparation method that uses relaxation and visualization techniques to help pregnant persons achieve a calm and positive birth experience. It is based on the belief that childbirth is a natural and normal process, and that fear and tension can interfere with the body's ability to birth a baby.

How Hypnobirthing Works

Studies have shown that hypnosis can help with pain management which helps increase relaxation, and promote a sense of control over the birth process.

Hypnobirthing works by using relaxation and visualization techniques to help pregnant persons enter a state of self-hypnosis. In this state, persons are able to focus on their breathing and relax their bodies, which can help to reduce pain and anxiety.

Pregnant persons who are in a state of hypnosis are also more likely to be able to visualize a positive birth experience, which can help to create a more positive mindset.

Benefits of Hypnobirthing

There are many benefits to using hypnobirthing, including:

  • Reduced fear and anxiety: Hypnobirthing can help the birth person to relax and let go of any fear and anxiety that can interfere with the natural birth process.

  • Increased relaxation: Hypnobirthing teaches a variety of relaxation techniques that can help birth persons stay calm and centered during labor.

  • Enhanced sense of control: Hypnobirthing can help pregnant persons feel more in control of their birth experience, which can lead to a more positive outcome.

  • Shorter labors: Studies demonstrate that birth persons who use hypnobirthing techniques tend to have shorter labors.

  • Fewer interventions: Pregnant persons who use hypnobirthing are less likely to need interventions such as epidurals or C-sections.

  • More positive birth experience: Those who use hypnobirthing typically report having a more positive birth experience overall.

How to Get Started with Hypnobirthing

Getting started with hypnobirthing looks different depending on what you need. Some factors to consider include the instructor's experience, the class format, and the cost.

Hypnobirthing classes typically cover a variety of topics, including:

  • The physiology of childbirth

  • Relaxation techniques

  • Visualization exercises

  • Birth affirmations

  • Coping with pain

  • Creating a birth plan

Once you have chosen a hypnobirthing class, be sure to attend all of the sessions. This will give you the best chance of success.

The Mongan Method

The Mongan Method is a premium childbirth education program that considers the psychological, as well as the physical well-being of the mother, birth partner, and newborn, independent of context, whether that be in the quiet of a home, a hospital, or a birth center.

It was developed by Marie Mongan, a counselor and an award winning hypnotherapist following her own birth experiences. Classes are taught by qualified educators, like myself, certified by the HypnoBirthing Institute, to pregnant persons and their partners, and can also provide support and guidance during pregnancy and childbirth. Couples receive a copy of the book HypnoBirthing®: The Mongan Method by Marie Mongan, along with the Rainbow Relaxation audio download, a manual, as well as other resources and handouts.

Your Birth, Your Way

Hypnobirthing isn't something you do alone or learn once and master.

Effective hypnobirthing requires personalized preparation. Your fears are different from the next person's. Your birth context is different. Your partner's role matters. Your existing beliefs about pain, control, and your body shape how you'll respond to these techniques.

That's why I offer personalized HypnoBirthing preparation. You can work with me through private sessions, both in-person (across Pennsylvania and New Jersey) and virtually (nationwide). I also offer seasonal group Zoom sessions for those seeking community alongside education.

But the women who report the most transformative birth experiences aren't those who attended a class. They're the ones who showed up prepared, supported, and grounded in their own power.
